Marcia’s love of gardening and flawless talent for combining striking colors and textures has garnered much deserved attention and praise from visitors to the campus. Following the tour, enjoy a leisurely tea with savories and sweets on the covered outdoor terrace at Fountain Elms.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, design books and popular periodicals stressed the importance of surface treatment in the conception of a unified domestic interior. The exhibition The Fabrics of the Home, on view April 4 through August 16, 2009 at the Museum of Art, will focus on upholstery and wallpaper treatments from 1850 to 1900 as elements of cohesively conceived interior designs and as works of art and historical documents.

Newly Remodeled Galleries Showcase
Nineteenth-Century Fine
and
Decorative Arts Collection.

The Museum’s historical American paintings and decorative arts have been reinstalled in renovated galleries. Divided into four chronological sections, the exhibition traces art historical movements from the middle of the 18th through the early 20th century focusing on neoclassicism, the Hudson River School, and the influence of European taste on American fine and decorative arts. Thomas Cole’s series of four paintings, The Voyage of Life (1840), is shown in an intimate gallery where visitors can sit surrounded by the artworks, viewing them in a way that approximates what Cole intended. Some of the Museum’s newest acquisitions, including an impressive cabinet (ca. 1875) by Philadelphia maker Daniel Pabst as well as Thomas Doughty’s upstate New York winter landscape Early Winter, Hiawatha Island, Owego, New York (ca. 1853), are on view for the first time.
