The Art Odyssey
Interactive Gallery

The Art Odyssey Interactive Gallery serves as an orientation space for Museum visitors of all ages. Activities are designed to engage visitors and to orient them to looking at fine art, decorative arts and to the overall museum experience.

Become a
Museum of Art Docent
Docents are the link between a work of art and a visitor's experience. They are knowledgeable, enthusiastic men and women who act as liaisons between the museum and the public. The word "docent" is derived from the Latin word "docere," meaning "to teach." The docents are facilitators in learning and they play an integral part in interpreting the museum's collection of fine arts, decorative arts, and special exhibitions to the diverse audiences the museum attracts. The docent volunteers are women and men of all ages who enrich their own lives by helping others.

Exploring Museum Careers
High School Partnership Program
2008-2009
The Museum of Art is now accepting applications for its popular Exploring Museum Careers High School Partnership Program. In this program, high school students meet with museum staff throughout the school year to put together an exhibition of artworks from the museum’s collection. The students learn first-hand about Museum careers from professionals as they work with Museum staff and other students in the program to organize an exhibition to be held in March, 2008. Participation in this partnership requires involvement of at least one teacher from the student's school. A total of eight meetings will be held at the Museum throughout the school year, usually on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the first meeting scheduled for October 10. For more information and an application, contact April Oswald at 797-0000 ext. 2144

Sponsored by HSBC Bank USA, N.A.

Applications are due September 28, 2008.

Tours for
School Groups
The Education Department offers a variety of guided tours to acquaint students with original works of art and to enhance curricula at all grade levels. Tours are approximately one hour in length and are conducted by appointment Tuesday through Friday, generally at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. Tours must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance. To prepare students for their museum visit, the Education Department offers slide sets with descriptive scripts for classroom use in introducing Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, and Museum of Art collections, including Fountain Elms. Slide sets may be borrowed free of charge for a period of 10 days. To schedule a tour or borrow a slide set, phone (315) 797-0000 ext. 2170.

Museum/School Programs
Museum/School programs are designed to integrate Museum of Art collections with the fourth and fifth grade social studies curricula in schools of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties. The fourth grade program is titled Homework, Hops and Hoops: A Portrait of Childhood in Upstate New York 1830-1860. The fifth grade program is titled Art and Life During the American Revolution. These programs consist of: a slide presentation given in the classroom by a museum docent; a teacher resource kit with activities, visual materials and a reproduction artwork for classroom use; and a two- or three-hour museum visit. Materials and activities designed to extend the museum experience after the visit are also included.

To request a program brochure and registration materials, phone (315) 797-0000 ext. 2146.

Registration is due by April 30.

Tours for Adult Groups
Museum tours are offered for groups of five or more adults. To schedule a tour for an adult group, phone (315) 797-0000 ext. 2170 at least three weeks prior to the desired tour date.
