Museum of Art Docent

Docents are the link between a work of art and a visitor's experience. They are knowledgeable, enthusiastic men and women who act as liaisons between the museum and the public. The word "docent" is derived from the Latin word "docere," meaning "to teach." The docents are facilitators in learning and they play an integral part in interpreting the museum's collection of fine arts, decorative arts, and special exhibitions to the diverse audiences the museum attracts. The docent volunteers are women and men of all ages who enrich their own lives by helping others.
The Museum of Art Education Department is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 docent training program that begins in September. Candidates should have an enthusiastic and friendly attitude, the ability to communicate effectively with groups, a strong interest in art, and available time for training and presentation of tours. It is not necessary that candidates have prior knowledge of art history, public speaking experience, or teaching credentials.
Candidates must be prepared to commit to a thorough training program that prepares them with presentation skills, general art history background, and information on the permanent collection and special exhibitions. The candidates will receive enriching information relating to a wide array of subjects, an opportunity to meet new friends with common interests, continual personal growth, and the opportunity to stimulate visitors' minds. Candidates will expand their understanding of art and be challenged by new ideas. The docent program is a productive way to invest your volunteer time while sharing your love of the arts with others.
