The School of Art class catalog is your guide to the courses offered through our Community Arts Education program. Learn more about the availability of classes, taught by professional artists, designed to encourage and enhance self-expression of students of all ages. A variety of classes are offered in fine arts and crafts, photography and digital imaging, and dance for kids, teens and adults. The School of Art offers something of interest for nearly everyone.
Students must be 18 years or older to enroll in an adult level class.
Art and Dance Classes begin week of September 2, 2008.

DRAWING
The study of drawing as a means to record and interpret reality, and as an art form in its own right, is explored using a variety of technical approaches. Courses in the basic elements of drawing, figure drawing and the transition from drawing to painting are available.

QUILTING
Whether you are a beginner or simply want to improve your skills as a quiltmaker, this class is for you. Learn simple tips and basic techniques in hand and machine piecing. Learn the fundamental in choosing fabric and playing with the color wheel with time saving tips in batting choices, threads, and needles. This introductory class will enable you to develop a firm foundation in creating a small wall hanging. Other quilting applications will be explored including label making, binding, and a sleeve for hanging the quilt.

JEWELRY/METAL ARTS
Students explore various techniques of jewelrymaking and metal arts using precious and non-precious materials. Beginning, intermediate and advanced students can acquire skills of the craft in these classes that combine projects, demonstrations and independent guidance by instructors.

PAINTING
Classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced students using watercolor, acrylic and oil paint are offered. From painting for beginners through more advanced study, students create projects that focus on expanding their knowledge and use of composition, design, color mixing and brush techniques.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Courses for beginning and intermediate students in black and white, color and digital photography offer instruction in the use of a 35mm camera, film developing and image outputting are covered in our digital photography. Lectures, labs and critiques are utilized to increase students' skills with camera and development techniques.

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
These portfolio development courses will focus on building and improving drawing skills, an important criterion for art college admission.

POTTERY
In the pottery course, all levels of throwing and hand building are covered, from beginning techniques to more complex forms and skills.

PRINTMAKING
Students with some previous experience in printmaking will work independently on projects of their choice with assistance from the instructor.

KIDS ART CLASSES
The School of Art Saturday morning children's programs are designed to introduce youngsters to art through fun and educational projects in drawing, painting, clay and sculpture media that stimulate imagination and creative expression.

About the Dance Program
The School of Art provides a broad, community-based dance program with classes ranging from dance appreciation to a pre-professional curriculum. Classes for children, teens and adults are offered in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. A pre-ballet introduction to dance for younger students covers the basics of movement and music. Fundamentals of ballet and jazz give students the necessary foundation to begin pursuing more complicated and refined elements of dance.
Jazz classes employ a variety of styles and music to help students realize their potential in technique and expression. Dance students are given special opportunities to work with and observe visiting guest artists. Master classes in ballet, jazz and modern dance are also offered.
All dance registrations must be made directly to the School of Art reception desk, in person, by mail or phone, 797-8260.
NO REGISTRATIONS CAN BE TAKEN AT THE DANCE STUDIO.

ADULT/TEEN DANCE
Ballet, jazz and tap classes are offered at a variety of levels, from beginner to advanced, to teens and adults.
