The finest talents of ballet and jazz students will be showcased as the School of Art Dance Program presents the 34th annual Spring Dance Concerts 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29, Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31 and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1 in Wellin Hall, Hamilton College.
The premiere of Diva will be the highlight of the Thursday’s Jazz Program and Friday’s performance and will feature our Junior and Senior workshop dancers in a powerful and lyrical suite of dances choreographed by Kathy Ryan to the music of Annie Lennox. Seniors Emily Pacilio, Megan Suwek, Kerstin Warncke and Melanie Cook will be joined by the members of the Junior Workshop in costumes created by MWPAI designer Heather Neil. Kathy Ryan’s Prince, originally presented in 2004, has been also reconstructed for this concert.
On Saturday and Sunday, the ballet program will feature Graduation Ball, a reconstruction of a 1940’s ballet originally choreographed by David Lichine. This light-hearted ballet tells the tale of first love: a group of young cadets attend a ball at the nearby girls’ school. Guest choreographer Olivier Wecxsteen was commissioned to choreograph an original dance to the summer movement of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for members of the advanced ballet students and guest male dancers, Jeff Hover and Jarrett Hover. Nancy Long and Lynn Bollana have choreographed the remainder of Four Seasons for 60 of the Dance Program’s ballet dancers and guest performers.
Tickets are $7 and can be obtained at the dance studio or at the door. For information call the School of Art, 797-8260.
